Sober is “radio appeal” done horribly wrong, and in many ways, a departure from the values that made Blink great (e.g. but something that still sounds pleasing to the ear of the masses. Radio appeal done right are songs like “I Miss You” and “Feeling This.” Complexity and detail you can find on repeated listens (I think there are over 50 separate tracks on I Miss You), great lyrics.
I think when people say “Radio Appeal” these days, it’s all about creating songs that sound pleasing to the ear for about 3 listens before you tire of the lack of substance. Honestly in my opinion, Sober is the worst Blink song made since the 90s (although Rabbit Hole comes close). I think the reason people don’t like Sober is because it was written with the laziest throwaway lyrics, in some country-pop fusion from the same guys who wrote Self-titled, Neighborhoods, Dogs Eating Dogs, +44 and Alkaline Trio.
